Dedicated to the liberation of poor and oppressed people of the world, Habib Tiwoni's revolutionary activity began in his native town of Charlotte Amalie in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. His mother ran a grocery which acted as a social space, centering his sense of place with storytelling, history and community. It also served as a strong contrast to the neighboring U. S. Marines base which spurred Tiwoni's revolutionary thought and initiative to defend his homeland against colonization. In his intro to Attacking the Moncada of the Mind-named after the infiltration of the Moncada Barracks opening the Cuban Revolution-Tiwoni writes, "From 1954-1956, I organized a gang of skilled brothers in sacking yankee owned stores and homes. As a result of police oppression , I fled along with most of the group to the states where I now live in exile." He settled in New York, and inspired by Mao's directives for art to serve as powerful weapons to destroy the enemy, Tiwoni embodied the role of "amateur people's propaganda poet." In addition to this self-appointment, he was a Black Panther Party member and correspondent, Caribbean Liberation Movement member, Harlem Mosque No. 7 member where he was a bodyguard for Malcolm X. Tiwoni's poetry reads like his life story, replete with revolutionary thought and action. In solidarity with international struggle, Attacking the Moncada. could also serve as a lesson for 19th and 20th century revolutionary history. Habib Tiwoni was also a sculptor and mixed media artist working with assemblage and romantic collage. Very good condition, light toning and creasing to wraps with minor edge wear. Saddle-stapled octavo in pictorial wraps, [76] pages. Seller Inventory # 2622
