Ausable Chasm is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in New York State. With towering rock-walled gorge and water of the Ausable River flowing through at various speeds from madly rushing rapids to deep mysterious pools, the Chasm is a treat not to be forgotten, The massive Hotel Ausable was constructed circa 1897 and continued to provide comfortable lodging for visitors until it burned in 1950.

This small, souvenir booklet consists of a single page of introductory text, followed by 12 photograph views of Hotel Ausable and the Chasm, printed in various tones of sepia, blue (cyanotype), and green. These views are each framed artistically in various ways, reminiscent of Art Nouveau style, and are printed on standard card stock. To show interior views would risk the stability of the binding (already suffering from an edge tear) so all I can do is list the views in their order (Please scroll down for the list). There is no printed date in the booklet, but I estimate it to be circa 1901.

PHYSICAL DETAILS : Souvenir bookle tThe binding is card stock, albeit of a thinner cut; this card stock is fragile. On the front is a rather blurry photo vignette view of the gorge showing a person in a boat, with Ausable Chasm printed above and below. The whole is held together by a laced string tie. The fore-edges extend slightly.

CONDITION -- GOOD PLUS -- This is a previously owned book that display wear but is essentially serviceable, with the following particulars noted :: This copy has suffered some wear and indignities : The head of the spine has a split, starting at the rear fold, and extending from the head of the spine diagonally down the front cover for about two inches. some archival mending tape could fix this. The surface of the cover displays some smudging and rub, else it is clear and presentable. The interior is nice and clean throughout, with the photographs displaying brightly. The binding tie seems to be holding fairly well.

At the top of the front cover is the inked signature of the original owner - her first name was Anne, but I admit to being unable to decipher her handwriting to determine the last name. A very nice find, and fairly uncommon on the market.
