First Edition with blank leaf at the front, 1891. Published from Davis's Posthumous Papers by his legal representatives. Tightly bound in navy cloth with gold titles. Light chipping at spine tips and very light spotting to covers. Glued to the front endpaper is a label "Compliments of the legal representatives of Col. Davis, Mrs. Ellen D. Cady and Mrs. Susan Train Gulager". Contents remain bright and near fine. This copy is from a 19th Century private lending institution, the Mercantile Library of New York. There is a number and Mercantile Library stamp on the title page and some of the internal pages. There are no other indications of the library's ownership.
