About this Item

Four weekly newspapers, dated May 31, 1851, containing "An Awkward Blunder" (from the German of Ludwig Tieck); and three consecutive 1853 issues, June 18, 25 and July 2, containing in three parts "The Fairies." This second, at least, appears to be translated from the German specifically "For the Home Journal," so perhaps a translation not found elsewhere. Published at a time when English translations of Tieck were hard to come by, while interest was growing. In an 1847 review of Hawthorne's tales, Edgar Allen Poe - after having highly praised Hawthorne a few years before - here downplayed Hawthorne as only peculiar, and said some of his tales seemed derivative of Tieck.
