About this Item
A third printing of the true first edition, published in 1949. The book was first published 1941, reprinted in 1947, and again in this third printing in 1949. With six black and white text illustrations by Alfred Sendall. ***Very good in red boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still nice and bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. Head and tail of spine and corner tips slightly creased. Edges of boards slight rubbed but clean. Light vertical reading crease to the spine. Edges of page block slightly foxed, but not affecting the interior. Internally near fine with no inscriptions. Endpapers clean without any of the usual off-setting or foxing. Interior pages clean. Spine tight. ***In a very good colour illustrated dustwrapper that has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 5/- net. Apart from a small chip at the top of the spine, and a very small area of loss at the top of the front panel, the dustwrapper is complete, with just some light rubbing and creasing at the extremities. Foldover flaps clean and uncreased. No fading even to the spine. Dustwrapper bright. ***192mm x 134mm. 254 pages. ***'The war in Finland found Biggles and his companions members of the International Squadron which went out to assist the Finns. By chance, when on a reconnaissance flight, Biggles learnt from a Polish inventor of the existence of certain papers relating to his discoveries that would be of the greatest value to any Government. Being anxious that they should not fall into the hands of the Nazis, who were tracking him down, he had hidden the papers in a certain spot near the Finnish frontier; and later Biggles was instructed by the British Intelligence Service to retrieve them at all costs. Biggles succeeded and got them safely home, but only after a series of exasperating mischances that brought him nearer to despair than he had ever been in the whole of his adventurous career.' [Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper] ***An uncommon early third printing - very hard to find complete in its original dustwrapper in such nice condition. Of interest to collectors of early Biggles editions and classic children's books. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.***.
