Item description from seller

BRAND NEW Copy w/trace shelf wear. English edition. Libretto of an opera in one act by Polish composer & conductor Krzysztof Eugeniusz Penderecki (1933 -) based on the play by Gerhart Hauptmann. 48 pgs. Set in winter, 1662, following the Thirty Years' War, in the remote village of Bolkenhain, Silesia. An exploration of the darker side of society of lechery, adultery, drunkenness, murder, greed, religious strife, blackmail and plague. First performed at the Salzburg Festival, 1986; andin America by the Santa Fe Opera, 1988. At one level, the opera is a simple dinner party; at another it is a society proclaiming peace while continually quarreling. And at its deepest level it symbolizes a civilization built upon the backs of others.
