This is a fine hardcover first edition, second printing two volume set in blue cloth binding. With a lovely inscription on the front paste down of volume I: Merry Christmas to Kathleen With love from Jeanne, 1950. It looks like Kathleen never studied this massive piece of work, 958 pages, with index, 2778 black and white photos and 8 color plates covering the period from God's bible to Godey's magazine.
