(See the long note in Richmond) which indicates that was actually written by Wells. Imprints 7882; Richmond 1413; MacLean 78; Sabin 38522. William Ladd (1778-1841) founded the American Peace Society, and "not only contributed to the technique of pacifist propaganda, but was the first to try to bring the peace question into the sphere of politics" (DAB).
