First US edition ("made and printed in England"). Original cloth. About fine, crisp copy. Frontispiece of the courtroom scene. This 1873 trial had international ramifications at the time, as four Americans were behind it and two had fled the country by the time their forgeries were discovered. The detective William Pinkerton, in London on other business, became accidentally involved in the development of the case.
