Gail Hamilton was the pen name of the American author Mary Abigail Dodge (1833-1896). A Battle of the Books is a book she anonymously wrote after negative experiences with her publisher, Ticknor and Fields. Dodge learned that her royalty payment was far less than the norm because she was a woman. Dodge advocated for women's rights and supported the abolition of slavery.
