"Aaron Alexandre (1766-1850) was a Bavarian-born Jew (trained as a rabbi) who became a French citizen in 1793 (he later moved to England). Alexandre devoted most of his later years to chess. In 1837 he published his 'Encyclopedie des Echecs' (Encyclopedia of Chess) - the first book to catalog all of the known opening variations. "The Beauties of Chess" has the distinction of being the first large collection of chess problems to be compiled and published.".
