The scarce first edition of this beautifully illustrated survey of Wiltshire, by English antiquary and topographer John Britton, previously owned by a the last lover of Lytton Strachey. The scarce first edition of this two volume topography of Wiltshire. Volumes I and II only of this work with a subsequent third volume published later, in 1825. Rebound in full calf with marbled end papers. Blanks renewed. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece and title page to each volume, and with five further plates to volume I, and six to volume II. Volume II lacking the engraved plate of Stone Henge, ordinarily opposing page 117. Collated, incomplete. A wonderful study of Wiltshire from English antiquary, topographer, author and editor John Britton. With the bookplate of Roger Senhouse and another of Hentesbury House, to the front paste down. Henry Pocklington Stenhouse was a publisher, translator and peripheral member of the Bloomsbury Group. The private letters of Lytton Strachey revealed Senhouse to be his final lover before his death in 1932. Two volumes bound in full calf with gilt embossed spines. Rebound with marbled end papers and end papers renewed. Externally, generally smart. The odd mark to boards and rubbing to extremities resulting in slight loss to leather. Front board of volume II is significantly strained and held only by cords. Remaining joints are cracked but holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age toned but bright and clean with the odd spot. Small closed tear to frontis of volume II archivally repaired to dorse. Slight worming to the first 80 pages of volume II, decreasing through the pages. Good Only.
