Description:
1st Trade Edition. 19.5 x 36.2 cm green cloth boards with black stamped titles and decoration to the front and spine. All edges red, pale yellow endpapers, [iv]57[3]pp, with 10 full page chromolithographic illustrations each with a captioned paper guards. Light rubbing to the spine tips and corners with a little bruising to the corners of the lower board. There is a gift inscription dated 1883 on the front free endpaper. There is toning to the free endpapers and to the verso of the plate pages and spotting to plates 2, 7 and 10 the last of which has 10 small pinpricks along the fore edge that do not affect the image in any way. First edition thus. First edition thus. Quarto. (iv), 57p. Illustrated by Boyle with lovely vignette drawings and 12 full-page chromolithograph plates printed by the Leighton Brothers. The plates and their facing title pages not included in the pagination. Bound in Burn & Co. in the original black cloth over beveled boards with four circular and one oblong paper onlays, printed and blocked in gold. Rebacked retaining the original cloth covers. From the collection of Robin de Beaumont with his bookplate. INSCRIBED by Boyle on the flyleaf with a poem - said to be authentic by Dan Hirsch and Robin de Beaumont. Osborne 590. Photo in McLean Victorian Publishers' Book-Bindings, p. 143 The original story of Beauty and the Beast of 1740 was rewritten in French by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont in 1756 in Magasin des enfants.
