Add to basketFirst edition of this collection of discussions and charts analyzing the effects of taxation on the beer trade in early 20th century England, in the midst of the Temperance Movement. Octavo, original leatherette covered boards with gilt titles to the spine, all edges marbled, illustrated with charts, tables and graphs including a diagram showing the upward or downward movement of Trade, Drink and Crime. Appendix. In very good condition. Rare. The temperance movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, in combination with First World War emergency measures, introduced a number of changes to the production of Beer in England, such as higher taxation on beer, lower strengths, a ban on "buying a round" and restricted opening hours. Most were gradually repealed over subsequent decades but, as is recorded in the present volume, at the time it was an issue of great controversy not only for consumers but for agriculturists, brewers, and exporters of barley, malt, and English beer.
