First American Edition but not the first state because it does not have Harper & Brothers on title page, "SCM Press Ltd" and 1962 on copyright page. Inside the front flap, on which is the price $12.50, it does not have: "Harper is privileged to present the first publication in English of Martin Heidegger's Being and Time." Original black instead of gray cloth. Fine in Good Dust Jacket with a small chip at the head of the spine, some small edge tears, and some substantial edge wear. Heidegger's magnum opus central to existentialism. Highlly influential. Heidegger's stature has been compared to that of Kant and Hegel.
