Contemporary cloth-backed marbled paper boards, spine lettered and ruled in gilt (corners bumped and scuffed, extremities rubbed). Text and plates with scattered foxing throughout. Provenance: from the Collection of Peter and Margarethe Braune. ---- FIRST EDITION of Schleiden's collected papers published previously and which includes his "Beitr�ge zur Phytogenesis" beside 13 other articles. "Schleiden . . . taking the embryonic cell as his starting-point proceeded to attempt a reconstruction of the development of the cell. He went seriously astray in this but he insisted on the independence of the cell and presented for the first time the notion that a plant, for example, is a community of cells." (PMM).
