"Bell Call" is Sylvia Ashton-Warner s fourth book, a novel set in a New Zealand classroom exploring the tension between individuality and institutional education. Sylvia Ashton-Warner (1908 1984) was a New Zealand educator and novelist best known for her influential teaching methods and her novel "Spinster" (1958), which won the New Zealand Literary Fund Award. Her life story was adapted for the 1985 biographical film "Sylvia," based on her work and writings. The film was directed and co-written by New Zealander Michael Firth, and stars British actor Eleanor David as Ashton-Warner, alongside Tom Wilkinson, Nigel Terry and Mary Regan.
