A collection of twelve volumes from the original eighteenth century Bell's edition of the Poets of Great Britain, including the works of Dryden, Swift, Butler, Gay, and Parnell. A collection of twelve volumes from the scarce forty-eight set of the Bell's edition of 'The Poets of Great Britain: Complete from Chaucer to Churchill.' A lovely pocket size edition of this eighteenth century work, printed for John Bell. Each volume has additional letterpress title pages. From the original editions of 1777-82.The present collection is comprised of the following titles:'The Poetical Works of John Dryden,' volume II only of three. Complete with an engraved title page dated 1777.ESTC notes another Bell's edition off the works of Dryden dated 1777-8, however the paper has a 1794 watermark, which is not present in this copy. ESTC T139863'The Poetical Works of Dr. Jonathan Swift' complete in four volumes, with the life of the author. Complete with a frontispiece to vol. I and engraved title pages to each volume dated 1778.ESTC T139893'The Poetical Works of John Gay, Including his Fables' complete in three volumes, with the life of the author. Complete with a frontispiece to vol. I and engraved title pages to each volume dated 1777. ESTC T13743'The Poetical Works of Samuel Butler' complete in three volumes, from the texts of Dr Grey and Mr Thyeer, with the life of the author. Complete with a frontispiece to vol. I and engraved title pages to each volume, dated 1777. ESTC T139897. Loosely inserted to vol. I is a second engraved frontispiece portrait of Butler not mentioned on ESTC, dated 1778.'The Poetical Works of Dr Tho. Parnell' vol. I of two only. Containing those published by Mr. Pope, together with his posthumous pieces and the life of the author. Complete with an engraved frontispiece and the engraved title page dated 1778. ESTC T139889 From the library at Julian Park, Hertfordshire, belonging to Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie. Audrey was the youngest daughter of an Anglo-American lumber and steel millionaire, sister to Edward James, a key figure in the Surrealist movement, and the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII. She was an English socialite known for her beauty and for charming various wealthy men, she was included in The Book of Beauty by Cecil Beaton. A patron of the arts, she assisted Viscount Carlow financially in the publication of limited editions of numerous works by leading literary figures such as T E Lawrence, James Joyce, Wyndham Lewis, and others. A hedonistic pursuer, she was recognised as one of the 'Bright Young Things'. In a full calf binding with four raised bands. Externally smart with minor shelf wear only and a minor rubbing to the boards and spine, with a touch of sunning to the spine. With a minor staining mark to the fore edge of the Swift and Gay set, affecting only slightly the first few leaves as well as the first few leaves of vol. III Butler and the Parnell single volume. Internally, firmly bound. With a minor spotting to the fore edge, not affecting the pages that remain generally very clean and bright throughout. Illustrated with engraved frontispiece to vol. I of each set, and engraved collective title pages to each volume. Collated, complete. Very Good. Seller Inventory # 794A26
