Henry Berkowi was one of the four first graduates of Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, being thus one of the earliest American-trained Rabbis. He ministered first in Mobile and later in Kansas City, but by far the greater part of his professional life was passed in Philadelphia, where for twenty-nine years he served the oldest German Jewish congregation in the United States as Rabbi of Rodeph Shalom Congregation. He was considered the most beloved man in the reformed pulpit of American Israel. His activities were wide. He was first secretary of the Central Conference of American Rabbis; founder and Chancellor of the Jewish Chautauqua Society; member of the Vice Commission of Philadelphia; author, lecturer, and civic worker. Mr. Max Berkowitz tells with simplicity the story of his father's honorable career. Here is a history of the Jewish Chautauqua Society. Here, too, are a number of sermons and addresses delivered by Dr. Berkowitz. Dr. William Rosenau of Baltimore contributes an Introduction.
