About this Item
The first edition of this ornithological study of the Pembrokeshire region of Wales, illustrated with photographic plates and folding colour maps. The first edition of Reverend Murray A. Mathew's study of Pembrokeshire's birds. A charming ornithological study, this work features two large folding colour maps maps of the Pembrokeshire region, and three pasted in photographic plates. Collated, complete. This work explores the physiological geography of the region, its islands, lighthouses, and the migratory patterns of its birds. From the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie, an extravagant socialite and renowned beauty of the Edwardian period. Impeccably connected, Pleydell-Bouverie was also the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII, and rumoured to be a lover of King Edward VIII. A sparkling figure of fashionable society, her friends included Nancy Mitford, Coco Chanel, Winston Churchill, and Fred Astaire. This work is from the sale of Pleydell-Bouverie"s library at Julians Park, Hertfordshire. She purchased the home in 1940, redesigning the interior and amassing an impressive library, featuring many examples of her own bookbinding. To the front pastedown is the bookplate of J. J. Baldwin Young, of Sheffield. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to spine head and tail, with minor discolouration to back strip, and rubbing to joints. Former owner's bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright, with the odd mark. Very Good. Seller Inventory # 794F8
