"The first comprehensive survey of the various injuries associated with childbirth. [Ehrenfest] reviewed the literature on almost every conceivable injury and neurological sequelae from laceration of the scalp and fractured cranial bones to the neck, vertebral column, trunk, and extremities. The centerpiece of the volume, occupying a third of the monograph, is the chapter on intracranial injuries. Ehrenfest reviewed the divergent viewpoints of neurologists and obstetricians, the former attempting to link neurological deficiencies in childhood and later life with abnormal labor and delivery, and the latter noting the association of such neurological problems with 'normal' as well as abnormal parturition. Overall, Ehrenfest stressed that many conditions previously regarded as congenital, simply because they existed from birth, were, in fact, traumatic injuries. He maintained that the obstetrician had a two-fold obligation in regard to such injuries. The first of these was prevention. He observed that the incidence of serious injuries decreased in proportion to the expertise of the attending obstetrician and the avoidance of 'heroic' obstetrical intervention.
