Add to basketNew York. Grove Press. 1963. First US edition; does not state first printing but is dated 1963. No edition remarks to copyright page. Thought to be a very early reprint; Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn along with Black Spring were published as a set by Grove Press. Originally published in Paris in 1936; it was his second book in between Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. Hard Cover. Quarter bound black spine over magnolia boards with gilt and red titles to the upper board and spine. Crown 8vo. 5.4 x 8 in {13.7 x 20.3 cm } 260ps. Boards have sharp corners and no wear to the spine ends. Internally, the text block has uncut pages and is near fine with a hint of foxing to the free endpapers. No dust jacket. The book was written in 1932-33 while Miller was living in Clichy, a northwestern suburb of Paris. Like Tropic of Cancer, the book is dedicated to Anaïs Nin. Miller created a new genre of writing which was semi-autobiographical which blended real and fictional experiences such as character study, social criticism, reflection, and consciousness. Some of the ten short stories were banned after first publication in 1936. We also have 'Tropic of Capricorn' in the same US binding. The boards will be covered with a 100 micron inert protective cover which is removable. Please contact us if you would like any more information or additional photographs.
