First edition, first state with the three typographical errors contained in first printings: page 19, line 6: elgble for eligible; page 209, line 23: chair for hair; page 275, line 22: counsinship instead of cousinship; plus the Errata box with five page entries printed beneath the list of plates. Frontispiece with unmarked tissue guard; dedication; preface; list of 40 pages of plates. Brown tooled quarter leather and marbled cloth binding with black and gilt decorated title block to the spine; straight boards with firm corners. No splits or loose pages; no previous owner's marks, hardly any spotting to the title page, frontispiece or to the text pages and plates, just browning to the blank end papers. Complete 38 inscribed plates by H K Browne (aka "Phizz"), including 10 "dark plates. Very clean and tight text block with no spotting or sunning: Preface, Contents List of 67 chapter headings, with 624 pages of text.
