Second edition (stated). Original edition, not a modern reprint. Oblong 8vo, cloth with gilt title on front cover. Book is copyrighted 1897, and preface is dated in the same year. Very good copy with slight wear to head of spine. Illustrated with diagrams and one photograph. In the chapter on Controlled Manual Blocking two cards used by the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad Co. are illustrated, a Caution Card and a Clearance Card. An actual clearance card from the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad Company, filled in with a date of May 13, 1951, is laid in. The card is printed on red stock and is in good condition, with a chip off the upper left corner. The author was a career railroad engineer; a contemporary biography of him is given in American Locomotive Engineers, Erie Railway Edition (1899).
