First or early copy Dodd Mead 1909 on title page with "Published, March, 1909" on copyright page.FOS dd October 13 1909 on FFEP. Translated from the French by Alexander Texeira de Mattos. Olive boards with art nouveau columbine (?) pattern. Gilt top edge and lettering with wear to spine top and tail and corners. Pages are browning. Front hinge cracked and Title Page is loose at bottom two or three inches. Upper right hand corner has the worst bump and this is showing at title page, which is missing piece 1/3 inch by 1/3 inch and following page with crease. There are a few pencil marks. The Characters in this play include eleven trees of various species, a grange of animals, fairies, dead people and bread, sugar, fire, water and milk plus "Stars, Sicknesses, Shades, etc." This playwright a Nobel winner, and a fascinating one. The reader is urged to consult at least Wikipedia. This is a man who once apparently cured himself of depression by renting a nunnery and traversing the estate on roller skates in the dress of an abbess. In fact, The Blue Bird was apparently conceived during this period of his very interesting life! 8vo, 241 pages. Seller Inventory # 001434
