Blue Ribbons and Burlesque presents more than 200 arresting photographs taken nearly 30 years ago and an engaging text that blends memories with information on nearly every aspect of the world of American country fairs.
With the same keen observation and lyrical prose, Charles Fish has turned to the country fairs of his youth. Country fairs still draw crowds, and readers will recognize many of the features so strikingly captured in this book. But times have changed. "Looming larger for the young than they do today," Fish writes, "the fairs as I knew them are emblematic of a passing way of life. They were rich with images and wonders at a time when entertainment was more restrained, the panorama of the wide world less brutally revealed. They presented forms of excellence growing out of our daily life―fine cattle, fast horses, fine machines―but they also offered provocative glimpses of forms of pleasure and the grotesque usually veiled in our little village." While never ceasing to entertain and inform, Blue Ribbons and Burlesque also raises questions about nature and nurture, theatrical illusion, the pursuit of excellence, and the power of novelty and the erotic."Synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title.

ORDERING BOOKS : Since our internet stock is stored in a separate warehouse, email is a virtual
necessity for the initial inquiry. Please email orders using the Advanced Book Exchange order buttons.
If you use your own forms, we need the book number and book title to locate the book. If you
telephone first, please have our book inventory number and
title ready and please be prepared to call back later when we have had time to pull the book from
storage.
HOLDING BOOKS: After we confirm that a book is available, that book is placed on a temporary hold,
usually 24 hours or until 1 PM of the day following our confirmation whichever is less, to give you time
to order through ABE.
SHIPPING: We cannot quote shipping rates unless you give your full address. Domestic orders are sent
Media mail unless you request Priority mail. Media mail with delivery confirmation is $4 for the first

for each additional book within the U.S. Media mail will usually take one to two weeks but can be
slower, especially near holidays.
Priority mail starts at $6 for the smallest books and goes up depending on the size and weight of the
