Over-all an excellent and very scarce book. Doreen Owens grew up in the jarrah forest country of Roleystone, Western Australia where the love of trees was encouraged by her father, an orchidist, and her uncle, a professional forester- Arch and George Backway. After completing teaching training at Claremont Teachers College she was appointed in 1949 to Manjimup Junior High School as a Home Economics teacher. In 1951 she married Norman Owens, A dairy farmer and, as their farm was opposite Diamond Tree, worked on the Fire Lookout for two seasons. They have three children, a girl and two boys. More recently she worked as a tour guide for Forest Industries, spending much of her time in the forest. Her other writing includes "Jardee the Mill that Cheated Time" published by University of Western Australian Press for Charles and Joy Staples South-West Region Publication Fund.
