Large folio, pp [630], half title, title page within decorative border, printed red and black throughout with large decorative initials and headpieces, bound in contemporary [perhaps original], half vellum with black cloth sides and black label, this chipped at the edges but not beyond legibility, the binding rubbed and soiled but internally sound and clean throughout, a very good untrimmed copy, FIRST EDITION; this huge and expensive undertaking was printed by Charles Whittingham for William Pickering and presents the Book of Common Prayer as used in the early Victorian services of the Church of England. Its production followed a series of similar folios reproducing texts of former versions from the mid 16th Century onward. The culmination of this considerable undertaking was this massive volume presumably designed for use in church services. Printed in Gothic letter throughout, with fine initial letters, ample margins and on thick paper it remains an impressive monument to the 19th Century Anglican devotion to the English Prayer Book.
