A two volume first edition, of the English translation of The Book of Duarte Barbosa, published by The Hakluyt Society in 1850 as part of their second series of volumes. These two volumes numbers fourty-four and fourty-nine in the series.This edition is bound in The Hakluyt Society's cloth binding, with a gilt illustration of Ferdinand Magellan's ship, the Victoria, to the front cover.Includes a frontis, two folded map plates and a third folded map in a rear pocket of volume one. Collated Complete.The Hakluyt Society was formed in 1848 with the aim of publishing scholarly editions of primary accounts of historical voyages, travels and other geographical material.Explorer Duarte Barbosa first published his travel journal c.1518, one of the earliest examples of Portuguese travel literature. Two volumes, bound in the publisher's original binding with gilt stamped illustration. Externally, pleasing. The odd handling marks and to boards. Evidence of bumping to joints and extremities.
