A decoratively bound first edition of chivalric romances, with particular emphasis on Arthurian legend, compiled by Andrew Lang, with lovely colour plates by H. J. Ford. The first edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with pictorial gilt to the spine and front board designed by H. J. Ford. All edges gilt.Illustrated with a colour frontispiece, seven further colour plates, thirty-five black-and-white plates, and many in-text illustrations by the successful artist Henry Justice Ford (1860-1941), best known for his illustrations of Andrew Lang's Fairy Books. A collection of nineteen chivalric romances compiled by Andrew Lang, including the Arthurian legends as well as the story of Robin Hood.Andrew Lang is best known for these collections of fairy tales, and was an avid collector of folk and fairy tales. He was a Scottish poet, novelist, and literary critic. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart, with a little shelf wear to the extremities and to the head and tail of the spine. Ford and with Ford's initials at the lower right of the upper board. Decorated endpapers by Ford. All edges gilt. Illustrated with eight full page color plates as well as numerous black and white full page plates. Wear to the edges and hinges, occasional darkening from age, but a very good copy. Inscription op a preliminary blank: "Thomas W. Othmer, From the Rev. James J. Cameron, Skagway, Alaska, Nov. 7, 1902." Five of the color plates and seventeen of the black and white plates refer to the story of King Arthur. Of the 19 tales contained, 14 of them refer to the Arthurian tale.
