The Book of Ruth with twelve Facsimile Plates after Original Drawings

Schneid, (1900-1974), was a Jewish art historian, professor, writer, and artist born in Czechoslovakia to Polish parents, Educated in Silesia, Vienna and Paris, he lectured and travelled in Europe. He published Das chinesische Vordergrundbild : Tier-und Pflanzenmalerei Ostasiens in 1934. Schneid established an art museum in Vilna in 1936-1938. During the 1930s, he began work on a dictionary of twentieth century Jewish artists to be published in Vienna in 1938, but the plates were confiscated by the Nazis. He traveled to Palestine in 1939 as a research student at Jerusalem University. In 1946, his book on biblical frescoes of Dura-Europos, [The Synagogue Drawings at Dura-Europos: an Ancient Jewish Creation and Its Place in the History of Art] was published. Between 1946 and 1948 his books on Rembrandt [ha-Tanakh bi-temumot Rembrandt] and classic Greek art [Omanut yavan ha-klasit] appeared. From 1948-1960, he taught art history at the Technion (Israel Institute of Technology), Haifa, and continued to write about art. In 1960, he decided to concentrate on his creative work poetry, painting, sculpting & moved to the United States, where he lived from 1960-1963, where he had seven one-man shows there and one in Canada. In 1964 he moved to Canada where he continued to paint and to write. until his death in Toronto in 1974. No publication date is mentioned on book but it is thought to be 1970 or 1971. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Text in English and biblical Hebrew. Slight rubbing to corners but corners square. Very slight sunning at spine and very slight soiling on the robin-egg blue boards.
