The author questions the plants being classed according to their florification, stating that natural order is often violated and that identifying new plants is confused and complicated thusly. He suggests that they be classed "not by the florifications only, but by the relations of their several parts to the rest of nature, to describe them by referring the colours, forms, favours, smalls and other characters of those which are unknown, those of plants or other objects, which are known" (Preface).
