This is another paragraph Review: This book summarizes a number of censorship controversies in England during the 20th century. Many have previously been documented at length, but have been unavailable for some time, for example the OZ trials, the Lady Chatterley case, Mrs Whitehouse's attempted prosecution of the National Theatre, and it is useful to have some of the details on hand, if only to remind ourselves how ludicrous the British have been in their treatment of serious artists who have tried to deal openly with sexual matters. The book, though not overtly, is clearly on the side of the writer, painter, playwright rather than of the Home Office, and it must surely be clear to most people, reading of the farcical activities of past Home Secretaries and private prosecutors, just how impossible (not to say inadvisable) it is to censor the human imagination.
