Part of the Boy Traveller series. Very good book, no dust jacket. Copyright page states 1887, title page 1888. Olive green cloth covered boards. Front board panel decorated with multicolor village illustration at upper third of panel, gilt lettering; map of Africa stamped on back panel; spine has illustrations of spears, animals, hut and gilt lettering and background. Board panels and spine have several small discolorations and scuffs. A few scuffs along spine folds. 463 pages plus four pages of ads at back. Map endpapers.Previous owner's name stamp on first two blank pages at front of book. Colored frontispiece with tissue-guard. Hundreds of intratext b& white illustrations. Edges at head and tail of board spine are rubbed and frayed with small closed vertical tears. Fore-edge corner tips have small rub throughs. External page edges are age-darkened and faint foxing. Light foxing on several pages at the front and back of the books. Age-toning, a few smudges and faint foxing along remaining text margins, else internally clean. Text block is a little bit shaken due to weight but is sound with no gutter splits or separations. The Preface includes the contents of a letter from Henry M. Stanley to "My Dear Colonel Knox" which includes the following excerpts: ."It is a gift to be able to write to interest boys, and no one who has read your several volumes in the 'Boy Traveller' series can doubt that you possess this gift to an eminent degree.Now, the Harpers desire a condensation of my two volumes, 'Through the Dark Continent,' to be made for young folks, but I have neither the time, nor the experience in juvenile writing, for performing the work. I suggest that you shall produce a volume for your series of 'Boy Traveller's,' and assure you that it would delight me greatly to have you take your boys, who have followed you through so many lands, on the journey that I made from Zanzibar to the mouth of the Congo. There is too much in my work in its present form for their mental digestion; but, narrated in that chaste and forcible style which has proved so entertaining to them, they would certainly find the journey though Africa of exceeding interest when made in your company. By all means take Frank and Fred to the wilds of Africa;.You have my full permission, my dear friend, to use the material in any way you deem proper in adapting it to the require meant of the 'Boy Traveller's.'
