Noble, a physician and former president of the Manchester Phrenological Society, sought to apply rigorous anatomical and physiological evidence to questions concerning the relationship between the brain and mental faculties. The work examines the theories of Gall, Spurzheim, Flourens, and other leading figures in early neuroscience and psychology. Daniel Noble would later become an influential writer on psychiatry and psychological medicine.
