Though The Breast itself did not win a major prize, it forms the first part of Roth s so-called David Kepesh trilogy, later continued with The Professor of Desire and The Dying Animal. Roth, who won the Pulitzer Prize for American Pastoral and multiple PEN/Faulkner Awards, was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1998 and the Man Booker International Prize in 2011 for lifetime achievement.
