Recent studies of the ruins reveal that the entire stretch of the bridge also consisted of coral reefs resting on tombolos which could not have been a natural formation, since corals normally form over layers of rocks. Further, based on radiocarbon dating of the structures, they roughly match the dates mentioned in the Ramayana. The Epic Says: It took five days for the army to complete the Bridge, with the expertise of Nila & Nala and guidance from Sagara. It was a curving Bridge covering thirty five kilometres over the sea, and from a distance appeared like an enormous forefinger pointing towards Lanka. A Shiva Linga was consecrated at the base of the Bridge, before the army marched along the causeway towards Lanka. The Question Remains What was the purpose of this Bridge? Whose idea was it?
