About this Item
A very scarce, first edition of Samuel Cradock's exposition of the Book of Revelation. Here he dissects the book from a Nonconformist lens. John Evelyn was a contemporary of Samuel Pepys, whose diary did not cover a period as long as Evelyn's own diary. His memoir spans the period of his adult life, from 1640 to 1706. His works are of great importance to modern historians seeking to understand every day life and events at a time before magazines or newspapers were regularly printed. He discusses the execution of Charles I, Oliver Cromwell's rise, the Great Plague and the Great Fire of London. Collated, complete, with the folding map of the 'Seven Churches of Asia'. With a 1970s bookplate to the front pastedown, bearing the monogram 'JE'. Hand-written shelf number in pencil to the recto of front endpaper. This copy was bought from the Christie's sale of Evelyn's library on 23rd June 1977 lot number 426. An extremely scarce work, in any edition, with most copies held in the United States. This copy is the only auction record in the last fifty years from this initial sale of Evelyn's library in 1977. This issue has 'at the Golden Lion' to the publisher's information. ESTC reference no: R31309. Cradock was a Nonconformist tutor, whose other published works include 'Knowledge and Practice', 'The Harmony of the Four Evangelists', and 'The History of the Old Testament Methodised'. In a contemporary panelled calf binding. Externally, very smart. with just some minor shelfwear to the head and tail of spine. Bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with just the odd light spot. Near Fine. Seller Inventory # 704L5
