London: C.Cooke, 1817. Richard Cumberland (1731-1811), the Compiler/Editor, was also a playwright. His collection features individual title pages and frontis engravings, along with his critique and a biography of the authors. An important source and uncommon to scarce today. Here are four plays: "Comedy of the Chances" As atered from Beaumont and Fletcher, 68 pages; "Comedy of All in the Wrong" by Arthur Murphy, 86 pages; "Tragedy of the Orphan; or, The Unhappy Marriage" by Thomas Otway, 74 pages; and "Tragedy of Tamerlane" by N. Rowe, 68 pages. Marbled paper-covered boards with a leather spine with rules and titling in gilt. The text is generally lightly tanned, with some spotting to the endpapers. Contemporary previous-owner signature on the second free endpaper. Light rub to the margins, but with heavy chipping to the spine and is rather loose; the front gutter has been reinforced with a linen tape, but the book demands some restoration. Please note the condition issues; Quercus must offer this as a Binding Copy, in need of repair. First Edition. Quarter-Leather. Very Good (Minus)/No Jacket. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.
