Modern half leather binding with cloth-covered boards, and gilt lettering and decoration to spine. It appears to be an amateur binding which is nicely done except for the gilt tooling which is all rather wonky. The book leans a little to the left (not a bad thing in my opinion!) when upright. This is the first edition of 1839. The date has been 'helpfully' written in blue ink next to the Roman numerals! Replacement endpapers, between which are front blank, title page, preface, text, index and back blank. x, 1154 pp. Owner's signature in blue ink to front blank; both blanks are heavily browned and spotted. Spotting, marking and rubbing to front matter and index, with a few small holes, and some lightly obscured text. Amateur repair to corner of one page.Occasional minor spotting and marking to contents but generally clean. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall.
