First edition. Terms used in the construction, equipment, management and military operations of a ship, listed from A-Z. Unfamiliar terminology that actually makes for kind of interesting reading. Actually kind of interesting reading, as most are very unfamiliar terms (polacre: a ship with three masts, usually navigated in the Mediterranean). With eight plates at the back, each with multiple illustrations, plus a frontispiece engraving showing a working dock. Hardcover in full leather, with gilt titles in a red band on the spine, along with six gilt bands. Rebacked at some point with a new spine and retaining the old boards and most of the endpapers. Very good condition, tightly bound, leather shows wear, a few small (very old) insect holes to the first few pages at edges, but nothing that gets in the way of the text. Former owner's name on title page and tidy crossouts on the old endpaper at front . Plates have some offsetting.
