About this Item
Broadside. Single sheet measuring 11" x 8.5" printed on recto only with text in two columns. Folded for mailing, else a near fine copy. A political broadside advocating for Puerto Rican independence. The text begins: "On the early morning of July 25, 1898 about 5,000 American troops - infantry, artillery, engineers and signal corps men… It must be noted that at the time this military conquest took place, Puerto Rico since November 25, 1897 had been enjoying the status of a FREE AUTONOMOUS nation…'. The broadside presents a sophisticated argument for Puerto Rican independence, based on both historical precedent, and international law (including treaties signed by the U.S.), claiming that "The acquisition of Puerto Rico by an act of 'unprovoked war' is not only null and void according to international law, but it is also in violation of United States signed treaties… For 61 years [dating the broadside to circa 1959], we have been a colonial possession of the U. S… Puerto Rico which has 'paid the tribute of blood' in TWO World Wars and Korea remains a colony of the U. S.". The Partido Nacionalista de Puerto Rico was founded in 1922, in opposition to the American occupancy. Initially a non-violent organization, followers were involved in the killing a police officer in 1936, attempting to assassinate President Harry Truman in 1950, and firing guns from the viewing gallery in the U.S. House of Representatives, in 1954. They, and at least two other sponsoring organizations, were labeled "Terrorist organizations" by the U. S. government. Rare. Unrecorded by *OCLC* although the New York State Archives notes a single example among their holdings, at the Office of Cultural Education, Centro de Estudios Puertorriqueños.
