Building 9731, Known at the "Pilot Plant" constructed, 1943: Beta Calutron, Alpha Calutron [YGG-027981] [POSTCARD]

This is a standard size postcrd, with photos of Alpha and Beta calutrons on the front with some text, and additonal information on half of the other side, with the last portion blank so the post card could be addressed and stamped.Building 9731, the Calutron Pilot Plant, also called ZAX/XBX, was the first building to become operational in the fall of 1943. It contained two each of the alpha and beta calutrons. It was used as a training facility as well.The calutrons there were also used to prove the operational changes suggested by Ernest O. Lawrence fromthe Radiation Laboratory at Berkeley, CA. Often, during the early days of Y-12's history, Lawrence, himself, would travel to Y-12 and personallymake adjustments to the calutrons. General Leslie R. Groves was also a frequent visitor during the startup and early operations. This is the first tangible product producing equipment. They did notreally know what to expect.
