Building Knowledge: An Architectural History of the University of Edinburgh

VINTAGESTAN BOOKS Title: Building Knowledge by Nick Haynes and Clive B. Fenton. An Architectural History of the University of Edinburgh Summary: Building Knowledge tells the story of the University of Edinburgh through its architecture. The authors explain how the university's buildings reflect changes in education, society, architectural fashion and scientific progress over several centuries. The book shows that university buildings are more than places where students study and researchers work. They also represent the ambitions, values and wealth of the institution and the people who funded, designed and constructed them. Starting with the university's modest early facilities in Edinburgh's Old Town, Haynes and Fenton trace its expansion into a major educational institution. They examine the architects, building projects and historical decisions that shaped the university's appearance and influenced the surrounding city. Author: Nick Haynes and Clive B.
