French text, small 8vo, approximately 160 x 95 mm, 6½ x 4 inches, pages: [16], 1-647, [11], collation: 8, a-z8, A-S8, T (T2 blank), a jump in pagination 142-162, signatures correct, nothing missing. Bound in full red morocco, professionally rebacked, extra gilt spine, 2 gilt lettered labels, gilt dentelles (turn ins), triple gilt ruled borders to covers, later gilt edges, earlier marbling to edges slightly showing through the gilt, marbled endpapers, manuscript notes in French filling one side of the original front endpaper. Covers rubbed and scuffed with slight loss of leather with neat repairs, a few leaves at the beginning tightly bound, pale browning throughout, occasional light staining and small spots, tiny tears with loss to corners or margins of pages 49, 59, 263, 425 and 481, none affecting text, small tear in fore-edge margin of page 294, just touching the first letters of 4 lines of text, repaired, loss of 1 letter. A very good copy. The Preface dated Nouembre 1581. The work is a virulent satirical attack on the Catholic church and the clergy, the nobility, the government and politics and the management of the finances of France. The three "perles" are the Word of God, the Aristocracy, and the Third Estate.
