An original catalogue from 1956, from the artist`s first solo exhibition in Singapore. Published by Straights commercial Art Co., Singapore. The soft cover catalogue measures 10 1/2 inches across by 10 inches tall. it contains 40 pages of color and black & white photos, the color photos are tip-ins. The covers are French flap styled, over a plain (and toned) cardboard inner cover. The catalogue is bound with inner staples. Included are writings by Michael Sullivan, Ma-Ke and by J.A.H. Flak, Organizer of Art, Ministry of Education, Singapore. Text in Chinese (Malay?) and English. The covers show light wear and soiling, with light edge and corner wear. There is also a short tear the the front and a slightly larger one to the back cover as well as a pea size hole. Additionally, there are some small stains where the staples are. The interior is clean and bright with no writing, markings, or odors. Cheong Soo Pieng was one of Singapore's pioneer modern artists, and a key proponent of the Nanyang style of art. He is known for his paintings of Malay women depicted with elongated limbs. Having taught for many years at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, he has influenced many of his students as well.
