A children's Russian fairytale published by Moscow-based Progress Publishers for the English-language market in 1977 during Soviet Russia. Story as told by M. Bulatov with text in English, and illustrations by Tatiana Mavrina (1902-1996) who specialized in the genre of fairy tales. Protagonist Ivan, youngest of three brothers (a common theme in Russian folklore), was considered a fool by his elders. While on watchful duty to guard the wheat fields at night, Ivan earns the services of Chestnut-Grey --- a magical stallion with a mane of silver and gold, With assistance of Chestnut-Grey, our young hero wins the hand of the Tsar's daughter, Elena the Beautiful.
