Copy #1410 (per publisher's numbered sticker upon front pastedown). Presumed first edition (no direct statement provided). 171 pages. Hardcover: H 27.75cm x L 20.25cm. Dark blue cloth with moderate mottling and vertical streaks of dark discoloration to boards; strong flaking to spine's gilt stamped lettering; front board's gilt stamped title lettering remains quite bright save for partial flaking to three letters of "Decatur." Some foxing and soiling to edges; strong toning to front and rear free endpapers; a few spots of light soiling to interior pages which otherwise remain clean; fore-edge margin tears to pages 115-120 with long 7.5cm tear and associated creasing to pages 121-122. Binding slightly stressed between pages 112-113 but otherwise firm. A good+ copy of an uncommon book. With b/w photographs and illustrations as well as several foldouts. Such city planning publications are particularly intriguing for their wealth of concentrated data on past conditions and intriguing future expectations. A landscape architect by training, Myron Howard West (1880-1960) was among the country's earliest professional city planners and worked with Daniel H. Burnham in planning the Chicago lakefront as well as being formerly superintendent of the city's Lincoln Park. West's American Park Builders Company earned renown for its community golf course developments led by golf course architect Tom Bendelow (1868-1936) who joined the company in 1920. West authored a number of articles on city planning theory as well as issuing plans for Rockford, Illinois (1918), Aurora, Illinois (1918), Auburn, Maine (1920), Springfield, Illinois (1925), and Jacksonville, Illinois (1926).
