Laid in are two unused coloured postcards featuring the US Armory, Springfield, Mass. All the major breech loading rifles of the Civil War - and most, if not all, of the obscure types - are detailed, illustrated and set in their historical context. Although only about thirty-five thousand breech loading rifles were purchased by the Union during the Civil War their effect - both during the conflict and after- was enormous. In the hands of Berdan's Sharpshooters, Sharps rifles set a standard for marksmanship that was later echoed by the buffalo hunters working at incredible ranges on the western frontiers. Other breech loading systems ranged from the glorious to the notorious.
