Item description from seller

Two large 8vo. volumes; ix, [2], 3-597 pages; vii, [2], 3-536 pages, including the Index; each volume with a frontispiece portrait;- each volume with some offsetting from a now discarded clipping; Volume One with a prospectus laid in; the two volumes are housed in the publisher’s slipcase; the slipcase is solid, with just a bit of discoloration to the pastedown.~~The Nevins bibliography considers this to be "[a] comprehensive, definitive biography of Jackson; well-written and based upon careful use of a wide array of source material".~~Eicher praises the account for "[s]tripping away much of the mythology that characterized earlier works" [and] "offers Jackson the man and Jackson the soldier in place of Jackson the legend."~~Harwell in ITC notes that "[t]he appeal of Stonewall Jackson is evident in the number of good biographies of him, and equally as many poor ones"; he concludes that this one is "extensive and excellent".~~This copy is from the personal library of Civil War historian Gary Gallagher; Dr. Gallagher has penned a note attesting to this which is laid into the book. (Nevins II, 44; Eicher 246; ITC 22). Very Good binding.…
